From 1878 til 1943 miles of two foot narrow gauge served northern and western Maines small communities. It is mostly gone now, but some of it still remains on Portlands waterfront at the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company and Museum. The train runs from 11-4 daily until October 14, and even runs during the Christmas Holidays. You can start in the Old Port, and take a trip around Portlands Eastern Promenade.
For those of you closet engineers, for a small contribution to the Railroad Museum, you can come for the day and be the engineer! Its better than the trains you had as a kid!
